My three wishes for the industry during mental health week


The Possibility Partnership founder Ava Lawler expresses her three wishes for PR and strategic communications … what are yours?

It’s no secret that burnout and stress is a big issue in our industry, which I’ve written about in Mumbrella before. I've seen the impact that energized and well-supported individuals can have in workplaces. It’s rewarding when people are  fully resourced, energized and supported at work – and the exact opposite is true when that’s not in place. It's really important for us as an industry to make sure we resource ourselves and our colleagues to build supportive, energized workplaces that help individuals through good times and bad times.

Three wishes is a concept to prompt PR leaders to share their three tips or kernels of advice to move the discussion on mental health in the industry forward. I’ve just taken part in the Smoke Signals PR podcast to help share what the industry needs when it comes to mental health and wellness in the PR sector.

Firstly, I wish for greater understanding and appreciation of the value of marketing and communications at the board room level. Increased understanding of the value of quality marketing and strategic communications would lead to better investment and prioritization of the work we all do and give us the right resources to do the job properly. This would allow us to operate with a lot less stress and also drive innovation and better outcomes.

My second wish is for greater conversation about the importance of emotions: how to anticipate them, how to understand them and how to deal with them both in society and also in the workplace. A better understanding of anger and fear - especially how it drives our own behavior as well as the impact that it has on others - would really help equip us to anticipate and manage our own emotions better. It would also help managers to be in a better position to support and manage the people around them.

My final wish is that senior leaders, both in-house and also on the agency side, are better supported with financial and personal support to have more capacity, capability, and confidence to deal with workplace issues. This would allow our best and brightest to provide better training and support to their teams so everyone in the industry develops their skills. As well as investing to develop interpersonal relationships skills, all of which would help people feel a lot more in control and a lot better equipped for this fast-changing industry.
